As we continue to celebrate Moms, we sat down with the director of “Milk Money”, Lara Everly, to talk about the challenges and successes of being a working mom, why she created the series, and how the experience changes her, both as a mother and a filmmaker.

Lara’s vision for “Milk Money” was to highlight the “other side” of motherhood that we often don’t see in our perfectly curated Instagram and Pinterest feeds to have real conversations and normalize talking about money in relationship to children. Through interviews with different moms (and dads) in the show, Lara learns that there really is no one way to parent and she reflects on her experience with her own mother and the biggest lesson that she learned from her:

“My mom always said “time is money”. I’ve also learned the reverse – money is time. But if anyone understands the concept of not having enough time it’s working mothers! And my mom was right, sometimes a little money to buy you more time for your family or work or sleep is a much needed investment in yourself. Both time and money are currencies. If time is ample, save your money, but if time is scarce, as it is for many parents, there is real value in paying for help to buy back time.”
